Ingredients

For the compote
  • 2 pounds apples (such as Granny Smith or Honeycrisp) Choose your favorites! Feel free to mix different varieties for complex flavors.
  • 1/2 cup sugar Brown sugar can be swapped for white sugar for a deeper caramel flavor.
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon An essential spice that beautifully enhances the apple’s natural sweetness; you can add a pinch of nutmeg for extra warmth.
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice Brightens the flavors; use fresh lemons for the best taste.
  • 1/4 cup water Helps in the cooking process; you can also use apple cider for added depth.

Method

Preparation
  1. Wash, peel, and core the apples, then dice them into small chunks.
Cooking
  1. In a large pot, combine the diced apples, sugar, cinnamon, lemon juice, and water. Stir well.
  2. Place the pot over medium heat and bring it to a gentle simmer.
  3. Reduce the heat to low, cover, and let it cook for about 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  4. Check for desired consistency; the compote is done when the apples are soft but still have some texture.
  5. Let the apple compote cool slightly before serving.

Notes

For a lower-sugar version, try using maple syrup or honey instead of granulated sugar. Enjoy it warm or chilled!
