Ingredients

Gravy Base
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter This forms the base of your gravy, adding richness.
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour The thickening agent; don’t shy away from whisking to avoid lumps.
Flavor Enhancers
  • 2 cups beef broth Adds depth; low-sodium preferred for more control over flavor.
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce Enhances umami flavor; tamari can be used for a gluten-free alternative.
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder Instantly elevates the taste; fresh garlic can work wonders too.
  • Salt and pepper to taste Balance it out, and be sure to taste as you go!

Method

Cooking Instructions
  1. In a medium saucepan, over medium heat, melt the butter until it’s bubbly and slightly golden.
  2. Whisk in the flour, stirring constantly for about 2-3 minutes until a nutty aroma develops.
  3. Gradually add your beef broth while whisking to avoid lumps. Take your time with this step.
  4. Stir in the soy sauce, garlic powder, and season with salt and pepper.
  5. Let the gravy simmer for about 5-7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until it thickens.
  6. Once finished, pour your warm brown gravy over your dish of choice.

Notes

For a healthier option, use olive oil instead of butter and whole wheat flour. You can also add a dash of Worcestershire sauce or a sprinkle of red pepper flakes for an extra kick.
