Ingredients

For the Dip
  • 2 large large onions yellow or sweet works best for caramelization
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil for a rich flavor
  • 1 tablespoon butter adds a lovely depth
  • 1 cup sour cream for creaminess
  • 1 cup cream cheese this makes it smooth and luscious
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder adds a bit of extra flavor
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Fresh herbs (optional) like chives or parsley for garnish

Method

Preparation
  1. Slice the onions thinly, about a quarter-inch thick.
  2. In a large skillet, heat the olive oil and butter over medium heat until melted and bubbly.
Caramelization
  1. Add the sliced onions to the skillet, stirring frequently. Cook them for about 15–20 minutes or until they are golden brown and fully caramelized.
Mixing the Dip
  1. In a separate bowl, combine the sour cream, cream cheese, garlic powder, and a pinch of salt and pepper. Mix until well-combined and smooth.
  2. Once the onions are caramelized, remove them from heat and let them cool slightly. Then, fold the onions into the cream mixture until evenly distributed.
Serving
  1. Transfer the dip to a lovely serving bowl and sprinkle fresh herbs on top if desired. Best enjoyed warm with chips or fresh veggies.

Notes

You can prepare the dip a day in advance. Store it in the fridge and reheat before serving. For a healthier option, swap sour cream with Greek yogurt or use a dairy-free cream cheese for a vegan version.
