Ingredients

Lasagna Ingredients
  • 12 sheets Lasagna noodles Try whole wheat for a healthier option.
  • 1 pound Ground beef Can substitute turkey or lentils for a veggie version.
  • 3 cups Marinara sauce Homemade or jarred works perfectly.
  • 15 oz Ricotta cheese Cottage cheese is a fantastic substitute for a lighter option.
  • 3 cups Mozzarella cheese, shredded Use a dairy-free alternative if preferred.
  • 1 cup Parmesan cheese, grated For that extra umami kick.
  • 1 large Egg Helps bind the ricotta cheese mixture; can skip for dairy-free version.
  • 2 cloves Garlic, minced Adds an aromatic punch.
  • 2 tsp Italian seasoning Brings warmth and nostalgia to the dish.
  • Salt and pepper To taste.

Method

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef. Add in the minced garlic, salt, and pepper, letting the mixture brown for about 5-7 minutes.
  3. Stir in the marinara sauce and Italian seasoning, allowing it to simmer for 10 minutes.
  4. In a bowl, mix together the ricotta cheese, egg, half of the shredded mozzarella, and a pinch of salt and pepper.
  5. In a 9×13 inch baking dish, spread a thin layer of the meat sauce at the bottom. Layer 4 lasagna noodles, a generous amount of the ricotta mixture, followed by more meat sauce. Repeat until all ingredients are used, finishing with a layer of meat sauce and the remaining mozzarella.
  6. Sprinkle the grated Parmesan cheese on top.
  7. Cover the dish with aluminum foil (being careful not to touch the cheese) and bake for 30 minutes. Uncover and bake for an additional 15 minutes or until the cheese is bubbling and golden.
  8. Allow the lasagna to rest for 10 minutes before slicing.

Notes

Feel free to get creative with this lasagna! Add layers of spinach, zucchini, or mushrooms to boost nutrition. Experiment with different types of cheese or add a white béchamel sauce for creaminess. This lasagna can be prepared ahead of time and frozen.
