Ingredients

Main Ingredients
  • 1 pound ground beef Opt for lean ground beef for a healthier option.
  • 4 medium potatoes Use russet or Yukon gold for the perfect texture.
  • 1 medium onion, diced Adds sweetness and depth to the dish.
  • 2 cloves fresh garlic, minced For an aromatic lift; substitute with garlic powder if needed.
  • 1 can cream of mushroom soup Brings creaminess; feel free to use homemade for a heartier flavor.
  • 1 cup sour cream Gives it that rich, tangy taste; Greek yogurt works just as well if you prefer.
  • 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese Use a mix of sharp and mild for a flavor explosion.
  • to taste salt and pepper Essential for seasoning and balancing flavors.

Method

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Peel and slice the potatoes into thin rounds.
  3. In a large skillet over medium heat, brown the ground beef along with the diced onion for 8-10 minutes until fully cooked.
  4. Stir in the minced garlic and cook for an additional minute until fragrant.
  5. Add the cream of mushroom soup and sour cream to the beef mixture. Season with salt and pepper, then mix until creamy and smooth.
  6. In a greased 9×13 inch baking dish, layer half of the sliced potatoes at the bottom, followed by half of the beef mixture, and sprinkle with a cup of cheddar cheese. Repeat the layers and finish with cheese on top.
Baking
  1. Cover the dish with foil and bake in the preheated oven for 25 minutes.
  2. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 10-15 minutes until the cheese is golden and bubbly.
  3. Let it sit for about 5 minutes to set before serving.

Notes

For a healthier option, substitute half the potatoes with steamed cauliflower. Add a layer of steamed broccoli or spinach for added nutrition. Spice it up with a dash of hot sauce or your favorite seasoning blend.
