Ingredients

For the Sandwiches
  • 8 slices Sandwich Bread Use your favorite; white, whole grain, or crusty baguettes.
  • 8 slices Ham Thickly sliced deli ham; turkey or roasted vegetables for a lighter option.
  • 8 slices Cheese Swiss, cheddar, or provolone are great choices.
  • 2 tablespoons Butter For a golden, crispy exterior; can use olive oil for a healthier option.
  • 2 teaspoons Dijon Mustard Optional; can be left out for a milder taste.

Method

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Lay out your bread slices and spread a thin layer of mustard (if using) on one side.
  3. Top half of the slices with ham and generous amounts of cheese.
  4. Place the other bread slices on top, mustard side down.
  5. Spread a thin layer of melted butter on the tops of each sandwich.
Baking
  1. Place the sandwiches on a baking sheet and bake for about 10 minutes or until the bread turns golden brown.
  2. Carefully flip the sandwiches, butter the other side, and return to the oven for an additional 5-10 minutes until the cheese is melty.
Serving
  1. Let the sandwiches rest for a minute, slice in half, and serve warm.

Notes

For added flavor, mix fresh herbs or minced garlic with butter. Try adding spinach, roasted peppers, or caramelized onions. You can also use pepper jack for spiciness or ricotta for creaminess. Add apple slices for a sweet crunch.
