Ingredients

Main Ingredients
  • 12 rolls Hawaiian rolls soft, slightly sweet rolls that caramelize beautifully when toasted
  • 4 tablespoons Butter, softened for that golden, crispy exterior
  • 2 tablespoons Mayonnaise optional; adds tang and helps with browning
  • 6 slices Sharp cheddar cheese, sliced melty and flavorful
  • 6 slices Monterey Jack or mozzarella, sliced for stretch and creamy balance
  • 4 slices Thinly sliced ham or prosciutto optional; adds savory depth
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard or honey mustard optional; adds a lovely bright note
  • 1 tablespoon Fresh herbs (chives or parsley) optional; for color and fresh flavor

Method

Preparation
  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) or heat a skillet on medium for stovetop sliders.
  2. Slice the Hawaiian rolls in half horizontally, keeping them attached as a tray if baking.
  3. Spread softened butter (and a light smear of mayonnaise if using) on the cut sides.
Assembly
  1. Layer cheese on the bottom half of the rolls, starting with sharp cheddar for bold flavor, then adding Monterey Jack.
  2. If using ham or prosciutto, tuck it between cheese layers.
  3. Add a thin swipe of Dijon if desired.
  4. Press the top half gently to nestle the layers together.
Cooking
  1. If baking, cover loosely with foil and bake for 8–10 minutes until cheese is melty; remove foil and bake for 2–3 more minutes to brown the top.
  2. If using a skillet, butter the outside of the top and bottom and cook, pressing gently and flipping once, until both sides are golden and cheese is oozy.
Serving
  1. Let rest for 2 minutes before slicing into individual sandwiches or sliders.

Notes

Refrigerate leftovers in an airtight container for up to 3 days. You can also freeze assembled sandwiches for up to 2 months before baking.
