Base Ingredients
  • 2 cups beef broth Or pan drippings from a roast.
  • 4 tbsp butter Can substitute with olive oil for a healthier option.
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour Can substitute with cornstarch for gluten-free option.
Flavor Enhancers
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped Shallots work well as a substitute.
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced Optional for a milder taste.
  • 1 tsp beef bouillon (optional) Enhances flavor if using water.

  • 1 tsp thyme

Method
 

Preparation
  1. In a large saucepan over medium heat, melt 4 tablespoons of butter until it’s bubbling.
  2. Add the chopped onion, sautéing until it’s translucent, about 3-4 minutes.
  3. Add minced garlic and cook for another minute, just until fragrant.
  4. Gradually whisk in 1/4 cup of all-purpose flour until smooth, stirring constantly for about 2 minutes.
  5. Slowly pour in 2 cups of beef broth while whisking continuously to avoid lumps.
  6. Add your beef bouillon, salt, pepper, and thyme. Bring to a gentle simmer and let it cook for another 5–10 minutes until thickened.
  7. Taste your gravy and adjust seasoning as needed.

Notes

For a lighter version, substitute half the butter with Greek yogurt. You can also add herbs like rosemary or a splash of red wine for added flavor.
