Main Ingredients
  • 1 pound Ground Lamb or Beef Authentic Shepherd’s Pie traditionally uses lamb; ground beef is a suitable substitute.
  • 1 medium Onion, chopped Consider using shallots for a milder flavor.
  • 2 medium Carrots, diced Parsnips can be used for an earthier flavor.
  • 1 cup Frozen Peas Corn can be substituted for sweetness.
  • 2 cloves Garlic, minced Fresh garlic preferred; garlic powder is a quicker alternative.
  • 1 cup Beef or Chicken Broth Homemade stock is best, but store-bought works as well.
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire Sauce Adds an irresistible umami kick.
  • 4 cups Mashed Potatoes Can use leftovers or make fresh with butter and milk.
  • to taste Salt and Pepper Use herbs de Provence for an aromatic twist.
  • 2 tablespoons Olive Oil or Butter For sautéing.

Method

Cooking Instructions
  1. Heat olive oil or butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add chopped onions and minced garlic, and sauté until onions are translucent, about 3-4 minutes.
  2. Increase heat to medium-high, add ground lamb (or beef), and cook until browned, about 5-7 minutes. Drain excess fat if needed.
  3. Stir in diced carrots and peas, then add Worcestershire sauce, broth, salt, and pepper. Mix well and let simmer for about 10 minutes.
  4. While the meat mixture simmers, prepare mashed potatoes by mashing them with butter and milk until smooth. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  5. Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C). Spread the meat and vegetable mixture evenly in a baking dish and layer the mashed potatoes on top.
  6. Bake in the oven for about 25-30 minutes, until the potatoes are golden and edges are bubbling.
  7. Let cool for about 5 minutes before serving.

Notes

For variations, consider sweet potatoes for a healthier twist, adding seasonal veggies, or incorporating Guinness for flavor. Store leftovers in the refrigerator for up to 3 days or freeze for 3 months.
