Preparation
- In a mixing bowl, season your ground beef with salt and pepper. Gently divide the meat into equal portions, usually about 4 ounces each.
- Slice your burger buns in half and set aside.
Cooking
- Place a large skillet or griddle over medium-high heat and let it heat up for a few minutes until it’s very hot.
- Add the beef portions to the skillet, leaving space between them. Use a spatula to smash them down firmly to form a patty. The goal is to create a crispy crust.
- Once the edges turn brown and crispy (about 2-3 minutes), flip the patties and immediately place a slice of cheese on each one. Cover the skillet for a minute to help melt the cheese.
- Toast the buns on another pan until golden.
Assembly
- Layer your toasted bun with lettuce, a smash patty, and any additional toppings you desire. Finish with the top bun.
Serving
- Enjoy immediately while the cheese is still gooey and the patties are hot.
Notes
For a healthier option, substitute the beef with ground turkey or chicken. Consider trying portobello mushrooms or a bean burger for a vegetarian alternative. Mix mayo with garlic or herbs for additional flavor.
